Digital Advocacy

Our new Digital Advocacy Service provides advocacy support to people in Edinburgh who want to have, or have been given, an online appointment by their NHS healthcare provider, mental health officer or social worker.

Our advocacy workers assist individuals with mental health conditions and/or substance use issues who face challenges in communicating with their healthcare professionals through digital online appointments. They provide support to help them express their views and ensure they understand their rights.

They also work with people who are being discharged from hospital and are being moved to online appointments with their Community Mental Health Team.

How the service is delivered

Home Visit – Our advocacy workers will come to your home with the necessary equipment to support an online meeting. They will set up the meeting and provide support throughout your appointment to help you communicate your views.

Appointment at Our Community Office – If a home visit is not suitable, or for short-notice appointments such as same-day GP visits, our volunteer advocacy workers are available daily to assist with online appointments at our office in Duncan Place.

An Advocacy Worker Can:

  • Discuss your rights and options with you, helping you make informed decisions before your appointment.
  • Support you in communicating with your healthcare providers to ensure your voice and views are heard.
  • Attend online appointments with you, acting as your voice and representing your views.
  • Ensure that staff understand what you believe is the best treatment and service for you.
  • Provide consistent support and advocacy.
  • Assist you in accessing MS Teams and the “NearMe” portal using AdvoCard equipment, either in our offices or at your home.
