Housing and Mental Health in Edinburgh: Survey Report

We are delighted to publish the report from our survey on housing and mental health, carried out in 2022.

We would like to say a big thank you to everybody who contributed.

Issues raised included:

  • Long waiting times for getting a social home
  • Difficulties with the application process
  • Unaffordable private rents
  • Issues with housing conditions and repairs
  • High energy costs and difficulties keeping the home warm due to inadequate insulation, window glazing or heating systems
  • Issues with noise
  • Security concerns and issues with neighbours not being addressed by landlords
  • A vulnerable female tenant being bullied by housing association workers/contractors,
  • A privacy breach affecting housing association tenants

People told us about the impact housing issues have on their mental health.

They also identified a whole list of changes which could be made to housing and the housing system in Edinburgh which would improve life for people with lived experience of mental health issues.

There are clear examples in our report of how people’s housing can negatively impact their mental health. Housing can also have a positive impact on mental health, but only if people are listened to and involved in the decisions which are made about housing in Edinburgh. Our report and the changes identified are a good place to start.
